Tickwanya Jones: I Can Love You

Music is more than the beat of a drum, more than a vocalist singing the “correct” notes. Music can’t be defined in just one word, or by one particular sound. Music is my life and my passion. I was born September 16,1994 to Greg & Twanya Jones. Ever since I can remember music has been apart of my life. When I was about ten years old I decided there was nothing else I rather be doing in my life than music. So I began singing around my hometown of Richmond, VA whenever I had the chance. Being on the stage gave me a sense of joy and relief. Music was always there to comfort me. I live, breath, and sweat music.

My eighth grade year I applied and was accepting into Henrico High School “Center for the Arts” Musical Theatre program. Those four years truly shaped and molded me as a performer. From ninth to twelfth grade I was in a total of ten musicals such as “Godspell”, “Little Shop of Horrors”, and “Willy Wonka Jr.” to name a few. When I was sixteen I decided to attend the Berklee College of Music 5 Week Summer Performance Program. That summer forever changed my life. Just like I knew all I wanted to do in my life was music, I then knew the only college for me was Berklee. At Berklee I knew I would be free to express the real me through contemporary music as well as musical theatre: unlike in high school where I was only allowed to sing musical theatre.

Because I was brought up in a Southern Baptist Church I am a true gospel singer. I also love to sing old school R&B songs by artist such as Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Patti Labelle, Stevie Wonder, and many more. But I’m also a lover of today’s R&B music as well. Artist like Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Brandy, and Jazmine Sullivan are huge influences on my sound. My sound is a combination of gospel, soul, and both old and new R&B!
