Tove Lo, a 24-year-old Swede, started her musical career in fairly inauspicious circumstances. First, she spent a lot of time in a rock band playing, as she puts it, “shitty bars” across Sweden, before eventually deciding to hunker down for six long months and focus on writing her own songs. That meant spending a lot of time in her shed, where she’d built her own makeshift studio. Eventually demos started to emerge and in 2011 she signed a deal with Warner/Chappell publishing. From there she started writing with Elof Loelv, who co-produced the Niki & the Dove album, and Swedish pop royalty Alexander Kronlund, who has helped write songs for the likes of Britney Spears, Robyn and Cyndi Lauper. She’s also collaborated with British pop royalty as part of the Xenomania writing team, working on various projects with them. Parallel to the songwriting for other people is her own popstar career, one that has started in fine style with Love Ballad, a drum-heavy, instantly catchy ode to falling dangerously in love with someone. In fact, she’s so desperate to make her partner believe she’s fallen head over heels that she’s even willing to share her drugs: “Jump off a cliff / I’d give you my last spliff / I’d do it for you / ain’t love sweet.” The video was self-produced alongside Swedish artists Motellet Film and features a lot of paint, some rugby players and a fairly cold Lo: “Imagine sitting on a football field in the dark, freezing, after seven hours, covered only in black house paint, trying to put on fake eyelashes!”
