Too Many T’s: Diamonds/Gold

Paving the way for their forthcoming debut album, London-based rap duo Too Many T’s are set to light up the industry with the surprise drop of their newest track ‘Diamonds/Gold’. Over the last few years Leon “Rhymes” Smith and Ross Standaloft have been taking the British hip hop scene by storm, receiving support from the likes of Huffington Post, Radio X’s John Kennedy and influential DJ Rob Da Bank, as well as performing numerous times at Bestival and Glastonbury. Having collaborated with the likes of Nextmen and The Dub Pistols, the laidback lads are fast becoming known for their quick wit, clever wordplay and heavy, beat-driven tracks.

Produced by Odjbox and Flux Pavilion, the track boldly treads the pathway between rock and rap, featuring their trademark crisp delivery and tongue in cheek lyrics, buoyed by a brash, guitar driven beat. Focusing on lyrical substance over the banal subject matter of flash possessions, the track is about “wack ass Instagram rappers just chatting about what they have rather than making any decent music.” The track’s comedic lyrics deliver serious undertones, as they rap their frustrations at how false images are portrayed on social media: “A new fur coat I never take off the tags, ‘cause if I take off the tags, I’m never taking it back.”

Influenced by old-school 80s hip hop such as De La Soul, Jurassic 5, and Big Daddy Kane, the jovial duo transport us back to a time when rap was positive and fun; and although the track is a lighthearted take on hip hop, their talent for writing clever lyrics shines through as they naturally flow with ease over the hard-hitting beat. Setting the tone for the band’s forthcoming LP – to be released early next year – ‘Diamonds/Gold’ kicks off Too Many T’s journey to becoming one of the leading names in British hip hop.
