The Lawsuits – Sweet Marcelle

The Lawsuits – Sweet Marcelle. Recognized as the City of Brotherly Love’s ‘crown jewel,’ The Lawsuits have secured their place in Philadelphia’s vibrant music scene. With a fearless approach to music, the group doesn’t follow traditional rules of genre, pulling inspiration from blues to reggae, Americana to gospel, to make a sound that is effortless and beautiful. The band released their debut full-length album, Cool Cool Cool, in October 2013 to wide critical acclaim. Their sound has been described as “one that incorporates strong storytelling, crisply built up instrumentation, and heartfelt vocals. These components infused with an omnipresent energy create songs that creep into one’s head for the long haul.” Whether on recording or live, the band delivers a genuine sound that takes listeners on a journey through their fine blend of art and craft, telling stories that are worth the experience. This quintet is made up of Brian Dale Allen Strouse (songwriter/ vocals/ guitar), Brendan Cunningham (bass), Vanessa Winters (vocals), Josh Friedman (drums) and Joe Bisirri (guitar/piano).

Fresh on the heels of their debut full-length Cool Cool Cool, Philadelphia quintet The Lawsuits will give us more of their effortless sound in a forthcoming EP, Tumbled. “It’s evocative of a memory, a time and place far enough in your past you’re not sure if it’s real, but close enough that you can still feel it,” Strouse said.

“Sweet Marcelle” is a breezy but powerful ballad, a perfect example of the quintet’s signature bluesy rock and roll sound. The song is at the same time sweet, ephemeral and slightly haunted. In their session with Paste Magazine, lead singer Brian Dale Allen Strouse summed up perfectly when he described it as “evocative of a memory, a time and place far enough in your past you’re not sure if it’s real, but close enough that you can still feel it.”
