Sofi de la Torre: Flex Your Way Out ft. Blackbear

Sofi de la Torre, the Spanish singer from the Canary Islands, shares her newest single, ‘Flex Your Way Out’ featuring multi-talented LA artist Blackbear, on 7th October under the self-styled banner #PopDoneRight. The track finds the two singers mirroring their dreamy vocals over Finnish pop producer Jonas Karlsson’s soothing, trap-infused instrumental. Whilst Sofi del la Torre is exposing a darker and more introverted side, as she laments the end of a relationship, the overall feel is one of closure and optimism. The repeated refrain “go ahead and play with another, not me, I’m done” is delivered in such a manner as to project a sense of calm and control through the emotion. This is a powerful talent that is prevalent throughout her work, and has seen her credited already by The Guardian for the use for subtle restraint.

Sofi explains how the collaboration came together on the latest single: “I’ve always had it in the back of my mind that our voices would sound great together, so I sent him a message after writing this track in Helsinki. He got back to me straight away with that killer verse & vocal and I’ve had it on repeat ever since!” Blackbear rose to fame as a co-writer on Justin Bieber’s 2012 hit ‘Boyfriend’. Since then the 25-year old producer has developed an intriguing musical persona – pursuing R&B and rap influences and working with hip-hop artists such as Childish Gambino and Machine Gun Kelly, as well as Pharrell and James Blake.

Following the success of Sofi’s track ‘Vermillion’, which was named “your gorgeously gloomy song of the summer” by TIME Magazine and the “game-changer pop song you need to embrace” by Billboard, ‘Flex Your Way Out’ serves as the perfect showcase of Sofi’s continued ability to craft hit records. With a currently untitled EP expected to follow, the anticipation has certainly been mounting since Sofi’s latest project, ‘Mess’, which debuted autumn 2015, and received praise across the board from Noisey to Pop Justice. Resolutely independent, Sofi’s latest release provides an introverted perspective to her unique pop style. Performing under the banner of #PopDoneRight, she continues to stress how pop should be heartfelt, original and accessible. ‘Flex Your Way Out’ serves as an introduction for many and embodies the sound that Sofi has pioneered, whilst standing as a testament to her artistic growth in 2016.

Sofi de la Torre: Flex Your Way Out ft. Blackbear Lyrics:
you are not the same don’t come pretend you are
and i am ever-changing too but i’d take a shot for you
any damn day and you know it
ride with you down any dead end full speed just to show it

but you are not the same don’t come pretend you are
circumstances changed the very core of us
but i’ve been down every step of the way and you know it
had you from day one but boy go ahead and ignore it

go ahead and play with another, not me, i’m done
love with another or several others, i’m done
flex your way outta here…go flex your way outta here
go ahead and play with another, not me, i’m done

(blackbear)
you are not the same and don’t pretend you are
why should i be feeling so alone when we’re just chillin
girl i don’t know what to say to ya other than i know i fucked up, i’m sorry
and i held you down when no one was around
will you stop me if i’m leaving

go ahead and play with another, not me, i’m done
love with another or several others, i’m done
flex your way outta here…go flex your way outta here
go ahead and play with another, not me, i’m done

we are not the same don’t come pretend we are
and i cannot ask more of you
i’d like to say i’m above it but fuck it, i’m salty
cause split seconds don’t mean a thing when the days are this toxic

go ahead and play with another, not me, i’m done
love with another or several others, i’m done
flex your way outta here…go flex your way outta here
go ahead and play with another, not me, i’m done
