Kaioyote: Sugar

With a smooth and piercing voice, undeniably connected lyrics, and unadulterated rawness, emerging soul singer and songwriter Kaioyote breathes new relevance into the music of today. Self proclaimed “soul music for the new world,” Kaioyote describes her work as “remedies for soothing the achey spirit”, and one would be hard pressed to disagree. Vocals like honey and songwriting that speaks from the heart, she twists her sound into a vivid landscape of love, heartbreak, and delicious sinfulness with bewitching clarity.

A child of the 90’s, Kaioyote grew up in a world saturated with pop music. She found refuge in the warmth and honesty of classic Motown and soul, and it wasn’t long before she was singing the songs of Aretha, Etta, Gladys, and the like, with a certain ease far beyond her years. Raised in Bigfork, Montana, her family moved to the cultural mecca of Los Angeles at the age of ten, where she continued to study music, fine art, and dance. She has trained in voice with names such as Brenda Lee Eager (who’s resume includes performing back up for Ray Charles, Diana Ross, and Stevie Wonder, as well as written material recorded by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and Prince) and Lis Lewis, (who’s client list includes Rihanna, Miguel, and Gwen Stefani).

Kaioyote has performed at The Plaza Hotel in New York City, the Ojai Art Festival in Ojai, California, a multitude of intimate Los Angeles Venues, and was featured with hip-hop artist Harris Rudman as an opening act for rapper E-40. In March she will be making her first appearance at South by Southwest in Austin, TX, at the celebrated annual South by San Jose event for the renowned Hotel San Jose. Currently, she is taking her talent to New York where she is working on her first studio album at Black Wax Creative, and an accompanying online documentary series.
