Idesia – Nu

Idesia – Nu. Idesia’s got more than a little something goin on, blending a delicious R&B, hip-hop, neo-soul, jazz smoothie into a satiating gift to the ears and soul. Sophie’s flawlessly unique timbre weaves in and out of the hip-hop drums, glossy keyboard lines and cleverly placed bass lines. One would think Dilla, Madlib or Flying Lotus are the masterminds behind the off-beat drum grooves in the verses, but they’re not. It’s just Idesia doing Idesia. Then the four on the floor starts to kick (get it?) in the chorus, pleasantly changing the feel of the song altogether. Idesia’s music possesses a keen ability to gently slip into my subconscious and take my mind to atmospheric and ethereal dwellings that I frankly don’t mind being taken to. Like a much needed massage after a week of exhausting workouts, let Idesia’s “Nu” be your massage after a long, hard day of work as you kick your feet up and perhaps crack open a cold one and light up a bold one.

Idesia - Nu

Sometimes the best songs are the ones that surprise. LA-based, electronic-soul band Idesia finds new ways to massage your ears on their recent single “Nu”. The opening drum beat finds me thinking of Radiohead’s “Morning Mr. Magpie”; but then the bass drops, and I’m looking around for Pino Palladino. Still somehow, lead singer Sophie Dimitroff could make even my econometrics homework seductive. By the time the chorus comes around, I am thinking no more.

Idesia – Nu

Idesia – Nu Lyrics:
Ways of seeing, caught me dreamin’
Stop and look, flowers sway so hazy
People I’ve known, places I’ve gone
Frames of faces, can’t be be replaced with

I hold them close, don’t be too closed
Get hurt the most, and brush it off later
So on and on, I’ll be walking on
’till I’ve passed and gone, ’till I’ve been reborn

Coastin’ coastin’ don’t leave the dreaming all to me
Floatin’ floatin’ these golden dreams don’t come for free

Ways of being, recent healing
Been seeking peace, been speaking peace
Been reaching through, hold my doubt hold my words and I’ll hold out, and I hold out

So, come follow beside me, two feet too few
Show me your guidance, and I’ll follow you
So on and on, I’ll be walking on
’till I’ve passed and gone, ’till I’ve been reborn

Coastin’ coastin’ don’t leave the dreaming all to me
Floatin’ floatin’ these golden dreams don’t come for free
