Dusty Springfield live at the Royal Albert Hall in 1979.

In the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Simon Napier-Bell is quoted as saying: “Vicki and I used to eat together, and she told me that Dusty wanted a lyric for this song. We went back to her flat and started working on it. We wanted to go to a trendy disco so we had about an hour to write it. We wrote the chorus and then we wrote the verse in a taxi to wherever we were going. It was the first pop lyric I’d written, although I’ve always been interested in poetry and good literature. We’d no idea what the English lyric said. That seemed to be irrelevant and besides, it is much easier to write a new lyric completely.” Songfacts®.

Dusty Springfield – You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me Lyrics:
When I said, I needed you.
You said you would always stay.
It wasn’t me who changed, but you.
And now you’ve gone away.

Don’t you see that now you’ve gone.
And I’m left here on my own.
And that I have to follow you.
And beg you to come home.

You don’t have to say you love me.
Just be close at hand.
You don’t have to stay forever.
I will understand.
Believe me, believe me.
I can’t help but love you.
But believe me, I’ll never tie you down.

Left alone with just a memory.
Life seems dead and so unreal.
All that’s left is loneliness.
There’s nothing left to feel.

You don’t have to say you love me.
Just be close at hand.
You don’t have to stay forever.
I will understand.
Believe me, believe me.

You don’t have to say you love me.
Just be close at hand.
You don’t have to stay forever.
I will understand.
Believe me, believe me.
Believe me.
