Dru Chen – You Got It Babe

Dru Chen is an emerging soul/funk/pop artist who once turned down a Berklee Scholarship to concentrate on his own writing. Equally proficient on guitar, keyboards and bass, Dru stands out first and foremost for his soulful vocals. His stunning falsetto, powerful belting and catchy songwriting draw from the soul lineage of Prince, Stevie Wonder and James Brown. Combined with a keen pop sensibility, Dru is a fresh face in a world steeped in rhythm & blues tradition. Born in Melbourne in 1990, Dru moved to Singapore with his family in 1998, before returning to Australia to study a Bachelor’s degree in Music Production. In 2013, Dru launched his debut EP, ‘Intentions’, at The Toff in Melbourne, shortly after releasing his first single, ‘You Bring Out The Best In Me’. The video for this was directed by Edwin Tejoz and was set in iconic local venues and parks around Melbourne, its upbeat vibe and nod to Soul Train earning it more than 20,000 views on YouTube.

Shortly after the Melbourne launch, Dru toured the east coast of Australia, as well as South East Asia, selling more than 1000 copies of the EP along the way. Earlier in the year, he’d played at the Mosaic Music Festival in Singapore, alongside Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Joss Stone and Esperanza Spalding. After a successful year, Dru kept up the pace in the beginning of 2014, releasing his second single, ‘Turnaround’, in February. Edwin Tejoz was on board again for the video, this time creating an extraordinary, neo-noir epic film clip that was premiered by US-based SoulBounce, the official R&B blogger for The Grammys. The ‘Turnaround’ single and video was launched to a full house at The Workers Club in March, along with guests Alta and Echo Drama. On May 12, ‘Turnaround’ was named ABC’s Rage ‘Indie Clip Of The Week’. To date, ‘Turnaround’ has gotten commercial, community and college radio airplay across the United States (KCRW, KX935), Australia (Double J, PBS, Triple R) and Singapore (987FM, Lush995).

In May 2014, Dru went to Singapore to perform as part of the Music Matters conference with Bec Laughton and Gareth Fernandez. Soon after, he took his very first trip to the US to collaborate, record and pursue opportunities for publishing, radio and sync. In October 2014, Dru performed at Soulfest alongside D’Angelo, Maxwell, Common, Mos Def, Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton in front of 10,000 at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Dru made his National TV debut on New Year’s Eve 2015 as he performed in front of an estimated 3 million viewers on Channel 5 for Singapore’s SG50 Countdown show. In May 2015, Dru was named LUSH995’s artist of the month. His third single ‘You Got It Babe’ premiered on LUSH995 (Singapore), JOY949 (Australia) and WFNM (USA) and is to be featured on LUSH x RDIO x SG50 “fifty songs in fifty days” series. He also showcased at Music Matters 2015, performing alongside Gentle Bones and Sezairi.

Dru Chen – You Got It Babe Lyrics:
an’t you tell (can’t you tell) by the way that I’m smilin’
What was grey (grey skies), now the sun is a-shinin’
All my life (all my life) didn’t know what I was looking for
Now it’s clear (now it’s clear), sugar baby, I’ll be coming back for more

‘Cause of you, I don’t need no other lover
‘Cause of you, sugar, you bring it on home to me, baby

Ten hundred million other girls around
And they just ain’t got what you’ve got
You got it babe, You got it babe

Sweetly low (mellow), our surroundings
Looks like this (garden) is our’s for the taking
Show me how (show me how), oh baby, how you want me
Moving close (moving close), baby please, don’t you know what you’re doing to me

‘Cause of you, I don’t need no other lover
‘Cause of you, sugar, you bring it on home to me, baby

Ten hundred million other girls around
And they just ain’t got what you’ve got
You got it babe, You got it babe
Lips so sweet like the finest wine
Cain’t nobody do me like you’re doing, so fine
You got it babe, You got it babe

Sit still, don’t move, tonight I’m giving you the best, baby
Up and down, swirl it all around, baby, I ain’t stopping till you come around
(guitar solo)
You got it babe, You got it babe,
You got it babe, You got it babe.
