Chloe Black – 27 Club

Chloe Black – 27 Club. London-based by way of Australia, singer-songwriter CHLØË BLACK‘s debut is a self-fulfilling prophecy of a song — when you have the kind of voice that is going to garner Amy Winehouse comparisons, you might as well sing about a club the late singer herself belongs to. “27 Club” focuses on a Lana Del Rey kind of pop culture death obsession: the club of musicians and artists who died at age 27 (some by their own hand, some by misadventure, some by sheer accident). The track is a spooky, soulful glorification of fame’s too fast, too furious habit of leaving a “good-looking corpse” behind. Black begs to be let in to the club, but this is so good it would be nice to hear a few more tracks from her instead. For the rest of us, “27 Club” can stay on repeat as Halloween costume tribute inspiration (Basquiat, Joplin, Morrison, Hendrix, Cobain to name a few).

Chloe Black - 27 Club

Her lyrically dextrous ode to the paradoxical immortality of those musicians who lived fast, died young and (for the most part) left a good looking corpse behind is full of a dark and infectious soul. “27 Club” is infused with touches of r&b and gospel as well as that elegantly gothic and rich sound that many of her contemporaries have embraced recently. Comparisons with Lana Del Rey have, inevitably, been lain at her feet already and it is entirely understandable as to why. There are similarities in style but it is Lana’s own fascination with the fabled ‘27 club’ and the furore around her interview with The Guardian about her apparent wish to join it, that makes the association most pertinent.

Chloe Black – 27 Club

Chloe Black – 27 Club Lyrics:
Shotgun wound to the head so I
Oho, oh oh, Think about it every day and night
Oho, oh oh, Joplin, heroin, cocaine, Cobain,
Raise my Hendrix to Jimi
Top shelf, despair, party hard, don’t care
No one gets old in the city

Going hard, going hard, wild hearts
Crashing cars, crashing cars and stars
Yeah we’re burning and we’ll never fade away
Falling hard, au revoir, wild hearts

Can I get it? Lifetime membership “27 Club”
Can I get it?

Leave a good looking corpse behind
Oho, oh oh, Pay the price and get your name in lights
Oho, oh oh, I’ll bury you with your guitar
Oho, oh oh, Leave flowers on the boulevard
Oho, oh oh

Going hard, going hard, wild hearts
Crashing cars, crashing cars and stars
Yeah we’re burning and we’ll never fade away
Falling hard, au revoir, wild hearts

Lifetime membership “27 Club”, Can I get it?

Joplin, heroin, cocaine, Cobain,
Raise my Hendrix to Jimi
Top shelf, despair, party hard, don’t care
No one gets old in the city

No one to pay, no one to fade
Come and say my name, yeah
Ain’t no one to pay, ain’t no one to fade
Come and say my name, yeah
No one to play, no one to play
Come and say my name, yeah
